Teaching Physical Education

Staff member of the Department of PE & Sport Science in University of Thessaly, Greece since 2002 (now Professor). Nikos received his PhD (2000) and MSc (1996) in Democritus University of Thrace and his BSc (1988) in Aristotle University of Thessaloniki.He has more than 102 publications in peer reviewed national (N=66) and international journals (N=39) and four chapters in international textbooks. He has more than 140 publications in national and international congress proceedings while his work has been cited more than 1450 times (Source: Harzing’s Publish or Perish). He is a member of the editorial board in 3 scientific journals and has served as a reviewer so far in more than 18 national and international scientific journals.He has published 6 books in PE, alone or together with colleagues. Two of them are the official public books for school PE in Greece, one more is consisted of about 200 lesson plans for the elementary school, one is about lesson design by using the Spectrum of teaching styles and one is based on standards-based approach containing lesson plan examples for the PE in junior and senior high school.The last 20 years he has been part of every significant educational reform in his country. He participated in “Olympic Education” (2000-2006) and “Promoting social and gender equality” (2006-2008) nationwide programs, new books for PE (2004-2006), “New School” action (2011-2013), New Program of Study and Teachers’ Guidelines for senior high school Physical Education (2014-2015).He is member of several professional organizations like the Greek Society for Sport and Exercise Psychology (now serving as Head), the Hellenic Academy of Physical Education (now serving as General Secretary) the European Federation for Sport and Exercise Psychology (FEPSAC) and the International Association for Physical Education in Higher Education (AIESEP).He has served in several important committees in his department; among them, as member of the departmental committee for the program of study (2002-present), internal evaluation committee (2004-2007); now Head of the Department. His contribution in the University goes further as he is serving as Erasmus Departmental Coordinator and member of the Institutional Committee of International Affairs since 2002. At the postgraduate level his administrative tasks include master thesis coordinator at the European Master’s Degree in Sport and Exercise Psychology (2010-present) which is held within the Erasmus-Mundus framework.Supervising student-teachers’ internships since 1999. His main teaching work at the undergraduate level is focused on teaching methods in PE, curriculum models in PE and at the graduate level is focused on physical education sport pedagogy, curriculum design and development and physical activity and health education programs design.Main research interests: learning environments in PE, enhancing motivational climate in PE settings, conducting short-term or long-term school interventions, teaching styles and teacher education..
